  1. Emperor of the French 1852-70, known as
  2. Louis-Napoleon. After two attempted coups
  3. (1836 and 1840) he was jailed and went into
  4. exile, returning for the revolution of 1848,
  5. when he became president of the Second
  6. Republic, but soon turned authoritarian. In
  7. 1870 he was manoeuvred by the German
  8. chancellor Bismarck into war with Prussia; he
  9. was forced to surrender at Sedan, NE France,
  10. and the empire collapsed. The son of Louis
  11. Bonaparte and Hortense de Beauharnais,
  12. brother and step-daughter respectively of
  13. Napoleon I, he led two unsuccessful revolts
  14. against the French king Louis Philippe, at
  15. Strasbourg 1836 and at Boulogne 1840. After
  16. the latter he was imprisoned. Escaping in
  17. 1846, he lived in London until 1848. He was
  18. elected president of the newly established
  19. French republic in Dec, and set himself to
  20. secure a following by posing as the champion
  21. of order and religion against the
  22. revolutionary menace. He secured his
  23. re-election by a military coup d'etat 1851,
  24. and a year later was proclaimed emperor.
  25. Hoping to strengthen his regime by military
  26. triumphs, he joined in the Crimean War
  27. 1854-55, waged war with Austria 1859, winning
  28. the Battle of Solferino, annexed Savoy and
  29. Nice 1860, and attempted unsuccessfully to
  30. found a vassal empire in Mexico 1863-67. In
  31. so doing he aroused the mistrust of Europe
  32. and isolated France. At home, his regime was
  33. discredited by its notorious corruption;
  34. republican and socialist opposition grew, in
  35. spite of severe repression, and forced
  36. Napoleon, after 1860, to make concessions in
  37. the direction of parliamentary government.
  38. After losing the war with Prussia he withdrew
  39. to England, where he died. His son by Empress
  40. Eugenie, Eugene Louis Jean Joseph Napoleon,
  41. Prince Imperial (1856-79), was killed
  42. fighting with the British army against the
  43. Zulus in Africa.
